than I anticipated.
Questions as to this have been sent out, and I shall be pleased to find that the Surveyor General can give details which reasonably account for the present excess.

P.S.
In a Return from the Surveyor General (just received 14th January, 1886) made up to the 1st November, 1885, he gives the relative costs as under:
Installation account.. $81,380 - 16,276
Working account.. $126,820 - $25,364
Taking $5 to a £ sterling
Total length of tunnel.. 7,300 or 24,333 Total length completed 4,000 or 13,333 Length to complete.. 3,300 or 11,000Taking the working account alone the cost of the tunnel conduit is nearly $19 per lineal yard, or £4.2.0 under the previous estimate of £23.2.0. As the work proceeds this cost ($19) will, I assume, be further reduced, the Installation account remaining stationary.
